A gallery restored

From 2011 to 2015, orthodoxy-icons.com was an English-language gallery of Orthodox iconography. It collected articles on Russian, Byzantine, Greek and Serbian icons, frescoes, mosaics and ornament. Over the years readers, students and other websites linked to its pages. After the site went quiet, those links led nowhere.

In 2026 the archive was restored. Articles are being rewritten from scratch, and each one is published at its original address so that the old links work again.

Editorial standards

  • Every article is original writing, researched against standard reference works and museum sources.
  • Where a date or attribution is uncertain, we say so, using phrases such as "traditionally attributed" or "usually dated". Otherwise we leave it out rather than guess.
  • We separate church tradition from documented history, while respecting both.
  • Each article states where the works can be seen today.
  • Corrections are welcome and are noted by updating the article's revision date.

Image licensing policy

We publish only images that are in the public domain or released under an open licence that allows reuse. Every image is listed with its source, licence and credit on the image credits page. We never present AI-generated or reconstructed pictures as photographs of real historical works. Where a verified image is not yet available, a captioned placeholder is shown.
